Kristyn Decker is an author, blogger, activist and mother. She grew up one of 23 children born to her father, a man with eight wives and who would eventually become the "prophet" of a polygamous organization estimated in 1998 to have over 10,000 members. Kristyn has not only been a child of polygamy, but also a polygamous wife and at one time a full fledged believer in the lifestyle. There are probably only a handfull of people on this planet that have a better idea of what goes on behind the closed doors of modern patriachially-based polygamous households.
At the age of 50, and after a lifetime of manipulation and heartache, Krystin decided to leave polygamy permanently. Since that time she has never gone back and instead has chosen to publish her story in her tell all book titled: Fifty Years in Polygamy: Big Secrets and Little White Lies.
Some of the things discussed in this interview are:
Methods used in patriachially-based polygamous communities to convince women to live it
The first time Kristyn ever felt the realization that polygamy was harmful as well as patenly unfair
Methods used by polygamous groups to find new members
Sexual abuse that goes on in some polygamous families
Idealized polygamy vs. real polygamy
The relationships between the Mormon Church and some polygamous groups of today
I hope you enjoy our interview with Kristyn as much as I did conducting it. She is a special woman with one heck-of-a story to tell.
Her book, Fifty Years in Polygamy: Big Secrets and LIttle White Lies, can be purchased on Amazon.com by following the link below.
Now sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.
